How was the assignment approached?
The decision to hold a centenary jamboree was predetermined. Hence, we were fully aware of the challenges ahead, educated by the World Jamboree experience in 1995. We were very aware that organziational chnage was needed. Therefore, project began with an evaluation of the past 15 years of major scouting events, including their financial statements. This evaluation served as the blueprint for planning the rest of the activities.
What were the biggest challenges encountered?
The list of hurdles for such an event is naturally extensive, but this particular Jamboree faced unique challenges not seen in other Jamborees. The planned event coincided with the four-year cycle of NaWaKa (National Water Camp). Despite efforts to incorporate as many elements as possible, several water scouting groups did not participate.
Securing a campsite for 15,000 scouts is no small feat and requires significant support. The city of Roermond stepped in to assist, but it was discovered that the ground was laden with World War II ammunition. Fortunately, it was cleared just a few days before the event commenced.
What was fundamentally new about the project?
Bringing all elements of Scouting together in one event is a complex task, requiring a careful balance between tradition and innovation. For the first time, the Jamboree was part of a series of celebration events, and it needed to be viewed as a component of the overall celebration rather than the primary focus.
What percentage of time was spent on this project?
For 5 years on average 10 hours a week.
